On March 18, a comprehensive article about Us4Warriors was published across ten San Diego County newspapers by Local Umbrella Media. This piece, authored by Bob Morey, highlights the incredible journey and achievements of the Us4Warriors Foundation over the past decade, underscoring its unwavering commitment to supporting San Diego’s active-duty military, veterans, and their families.

A Vision Realized: The Birth of Us4Warriors

In 2013, a dedicated group of individuals with a shared vision to uplift and support the military community in San Diego came together to form the Us4Warriors Foundation. Over the years, this award-winning 501(c)(3) charity has positively impacted more than 62,000 individuals through various initiatives focused on hunger relief, employment assistance, and volunteer-led community projects. The foundation’s Warrior Volunteer Force, a collective of over 5,000 volunteers, has been instrumental in hosting food drives, providing employment support, conducting building repairs, and organizing veteran-focused art and writing therapy sessions, among other community service efforts.

Food4Warriors: Combating Food Insecurity

At the heart of Us4Warriors’ mission is the Food4Warriors program, which has been a leading force in addressing food insecurity among San Diego’s military community. San Diego County, home to the largest concentration of military and veterans in the country, faces significant challenges due to the high cost of living. Recognizing this urgent need, Us4Warriors, under the leadership of Co-founder and Executive Director Tony Stewart, has been a vocal advocate for supporting military families in need.

The Food4Warriors program operates through a multi-faceted approach, including monthly food distributions and deliveries of dietary-approved groceries and care boxes to VA clinics and outreach locations. This initiative has provided essential support to veterans identified with food insecurity and economic distress, making Us4Warriors the exclusive food provider for the local VA’s Food Empowerment Program since 2016.

Community Support and Advocacy

Us4Warriors’ impact extends beyond immediate relief efforts. The foundation has been actively involved in the community, serving as a San Diego County Live Well partner and a Co-Champion on the San Diego Veterans Coalition. Through collaborations with over 160 organizations, Us4Warriors has been able to channel resources and support to those in need effectively.

In 2020, Us4Warriors was mentioned in testimony at a Congressional Hearing as a leader in supporting veterans. Two years later, Tony Stewart provided testimony at a Congressional Hearing on “Veterans Hunger,” highlighting key points for governmental agencies and communities to better support veterans facing food insecurity.

Fundraising and Community Engagement

To sustain its critical programs, Us4Warriors relies on community support and fundraising events. One notable example is the annual Golf4Warriors Battle Bogey Tournament, which brings together supporters for a day of golf while raising funds to support San Diego’s military families. This event, now in its 10th year, honors the legacy of Manny Otero, a founding father of Us4Warriors who passed away in 2018.

Looking Ahead

As San Diego continues to face economic hardships and a high cost of living, the work of Us4Warriors remains more critical than ever. With a commitment to uplifting the military and veteran community, Us4Warriors aims to expand its reach and deepen its impact. The foundation’s ongoing efforts ensure that no military or veteran family in San Diego has to face food insecurity and economic hardship alone.
